Before a jellyfish polyp turns into a free-swimming adult, it clones itself a few times, just to be sure that it has a good chance of reproducing. This polyp is going through a process called strobilation – turning itself into many individual ephyra – baby jellies ready to swim off into the ocean. With every pulse, the grooves in the sides of this polyp become deeper and deeper – eventually allowing the clones to be free!
