OK, I had to put XP on a partition for some of my software and of course it overwrote the MBR (and the bastard wiped a 40 GB movie and music partition too!). I put in my bootdisk to get back to linux ...
After managing to completely hose my system, I decided it was time for a wipe 'n reload. I backed up all relevant files, and blew everything away. I'm installing Ubuntu 8.04 AMD64, and Windows XP 32 ...
